indoor cages

Please see also - Play Pens for Bunnies!

An increasing trend is to bring your bunny indoors to live as a house-rabbit.  We always encourage this as it allows your bunny/bunnies to become real members of your family and you will see far more of their personality, character and benefit from increased interaction with your furry friend.

Bunnies can be either free-range but, if you're out at work all day and not 100% confident about leaving him/her/them to roam free, then indoor cages are available.  We keep an increasing range of these which are available via mail order and have introduced a new range for 2007.

Indoor cages provide an excellent 'base' for indoor bunnies.  Smaller breeds can be confined to a cage whilst unsupervised (ie when you're out at work or overnight) but fitting a play pen to the front will allow extra space for exercise and play.

Larger breeds, eg French Lops, can use the cages as their 'base' - the cages are the perfect place for their bowls, bottle, litter tray and toys.  However, French Lops and large breed bunnies must NOT be confined to these cages for longer periods as this will result in frustration as they are large bunnies who need space and they will need a play pen too if they are not free-range.

A play pen fitted in front of the cage and the cage door left open will allow your bunnies the freedom to hop in and out as they wish, provide ample space for unsupervised exercise and play time - and you can rest assured knowing that your cables and best furniture are safe!

The cages featured below are new models.  Cages of this size are not normally sold in most pet shops which stock only 80cm-102cm cages with proportionately smaller height and depth dimensions.  We feel these are far too small for most rabbits.

Our 120cm cage is unique - it has a large double-width door offering easy access for larger breeds and, in conjunction with a play pen,  could be used as a base for a French Lop to contain his/her litter tray, food bowl, bottle and toys.  It will also easily fit into most cars for trips to the vet.

These cages can be used with a play pen to allow your bunny space to exercise and play whilst unsupervised.  These are especially recommended for larger breeds such as French Lops as these bunnies are too large to be confined to any cage.

We have several other designs of indoor cages available to choose from:

Indoor cages can be convenient for a number of uses:-

bullet

They are convenient for transporting your bunny and could allow him/her to join you on a UK holiday.  Some hotels/B&B and self-catering establishments will allow you to keep your well-behaved bunny indoors and this can be less-stressful and less worrying for both you and your bunny than taking him/her to a boarding establishment.

bullet

They can contain food bowls, water bottle, hay racks and litter tray so that any 'mess' is contained within the plastic base and your home can carpets stay relatively clean and litter-free!

bullet

They give your bunny his/her own personal space into which he can retreat if s/he doesn't wish to be disturbed for a while.

bullet

Your bunny can be confined when required.

bullet

They can be useful for confining a bunny during litter-training periods.  **Please remember a large bunny should NEVER be confined for long periods in a small cage**.

bullet

A Play Pen can be positioned in front of the cages to allow your bunnies extra space to exercise and play whilst unsupervised, eg while you're out at work.  This offers greater versatility and space which will be appreciated by your bunny.

However, there is a 'design fault' in most cages which have a drop-down front door.  These wire doors are a perfect size for a small bunny's legs to become trapped between the rungs and this can lead to painful injuries or even broken bones.  To prevent this, please either fit a wooden ramp over the the opened door so your bunny's feet don't come into contact with the rungs.  Alternatively, please remove the door by prising  apart the fittings at the foot of the door using pliers.  Then simply refit the door by suspending it from the top of the opening doorway so that the door opens upwards.  The door can then be held open either by a piece of wire or a piece of looped elastic with a hook to each end (as sold by car accessory stores for about 50p - £1).

A few minutes of such care and attention can prevent serious injury.
